Research Statement
I define myself as a historian of the modern Middle East. I am interested in the construction of national identity, the emergence of national movements, modernization, state-building, and colonial-imperial encroachments in the Middle East. While I continue to engage wide-ranging regions both in the Middle East and North Africa, my particular focus is on the late Ottoman and early Republican years in Turkey.
