Teaching Experience

'87-present: Professor Lecturer, Geography Department and Middle East Center, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah. I have taught geography of the United States (27 times), world regional geography (23 times), geographic perspectives on world issues (23 times), Geography of the Middle East (fifteen times), geography of Utah (twelve times), human geography (eleven times), historical geography of the United States (three times), geography of Latin America (three times), population geography (twice), physical geography (twice), the world of Islam, political geography, and geography of East & Southeast Asia. I wrote the study guide that accompanied the textbook I used for a number of years for the world regional geography course (it was published in July, 1992). For the past five years, I have been undergraduate advisor for the geography department. I am chair of the Undergraduate Committee, which is responsible for curriculum decisions. During the 2002-2003 academic year I developed two on-line courses: geography of North America and physical geography.
9/'77-5/'78: Visiting Instructor, Geography Department, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. I taught four upper division courses: population geography, urban geography, political geography and regional geography of Canada. I also administered extension courses offered by Simon Fraser on community college campuses scattered throughout the province.
9/'69-6/'72: Teaching Assistant, Geography Departments, Universities of Denver and Hawaii. On a half-time basis, I instructed students in introductory university courses in physical geography, climatology, statistical methods, computer programming, and remote sensing.
9/'67-6/'69: History Teacher, Kents Hill School, Kents Hill, Maine. I taught European, American, and ancient history to students in grades 9-12. I also coached sports.
9/'66-7/'67: Geography Teacher, Licensed Victuallers’ School, Slough, England. I taught seven different geography courses to students in grades 7-13.
'84-present: Ski Instructor, Deer Valley Ski School, Park City, Utah. For twenty winters, I have instructed people of all ages and abilities. I am certified as a ski instructor in both Canada and the United States.

Administrative Experience

6/'89-6/'92: Elected member of the Board of Directors, Professional Ski Instructors of America-Intermountain Division. This organization certifies ski instructors, designs and implements instructor training programs, and works with the ski areas to promote ski instruction.
3/'79-10/'80: Executive Director, Governor’s Commission on Population and the Hawaiian Future. I was administrator for the Commission, whose purpose was to design population policy for the State. I managed the Commission’s budget and research staff, represented the Commission at sessions of the state legislature and at public meetings, and acted as liaison between the Commission and the Governor’s Office.
Summer '74: Group Leader, East-West Institute on Population Geography, Honolulu, Hawaii. I coordinated the efforts of Asian and American scholars who were developing a curriculum guide to population geography (published in 1978).

Technical Experience

1/'87-6/'90: Independent Socio-economic Consultant, Salt Lake City, Utah. I worked on three separate consulting contracts, one with Paul Nelson Associates and two with Richard Kohler, Architect-Urban Design.
3/'86-8/'86: Socio-economist, Weston Consultants, Rockville, Maryland. I provided technical assistance to the U.S. Department of Energy in its efforts to locate a site for the nation’s first nuclear waste repository.
1/'84-4/'84: Demographic Consultant, Family and Demographic Research Institute, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. I prepared demographic profiles for various national populations.
2/'81-6/'83: Economic Consultant, Canadian Resoucecon, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I conducted demographic and economic impact studies for a variety of proposed developments.
10/'74-10/'75: Research Statistician, Hawaii Advisory Council on Developmental Disabilities. I designed, researched and wrote a state plan for services for the developmentally disabled.
11/'73-5/'74: Assistant Planner, Oldman River Regional Planning Commission, Alberta, Canada.
1/'70-8/'70: Assistant Meteorologist to Dr. William Peterman, Colorado and Arizona. We generated meteorological forecasts for a weather modification experiment near Flagstaff, Arizona.
Summer '65: Field Assistant to Professor Donald Foote, Arctic Alaska. We collected data in Point Hope and Shungnak pertaining to the social and economic characteristics of Inuit life.

Other Experience

12/'98-present: I recently finished building a 21’ jet-powered river boat that I intend to navigate from Wyoming to Buenos Aires using protected waterways of North and South America. En route I plan to (1) gather environmental and cultural data that shed light on the relationship between human activity and fluvial conditions and (2) teach a real-time, web-based course from the boat that will—in effect—be a virtual field trip.
9/'90-10/'90: Shortly after the revolution, I undertook a five-week solo mountain biking trip through Romania. Afterwards, I wrote a paper on “Poverty in Romania”.
5/'84-11/'84: First Mate, White Eagle. I was the deck hand on an 86’ sailboat cruising in the South Pacific: New Zealand, Tahiti, the Tuamotus, the Cook Islands, Tonga.
8/'74-1/'76: I single-handedly built a 23’ sailing Polynesian catamaran, learned to sail, and made sailing expeditions between the Hawaiian Islands.
